Top 4 places to practice kitesurfing in Colombia

Posted by SeaAdviser on July 8, 2018

Colombia is a hot spot for extremes sports and outdoor activities, this is a place where people can always find something to do out there, whether it is in the ocean, in the mountains, in the forest, you will always find something cool, extreme and different to do.

This time, I want to give you all 4 places where you can go to have a kitesurfing sesh. From up in the north to down south there’re several places to go to.

1. Cabo de la vela, Guajira

Located in the northern Colombia, in the department of la Guajira, this is a beautiful dessert, out of the beaten track. It is quite difficult to get there, in order to do so, you first have to go to the town of Riocha (by plane or about 7 hours by road from Cartagena or 3 hours from Santa Marta). Once you get there, take a four-wheel drive, otherwise you will have problems to freely move around due to the dirty, sand roads, its weather is hot, dry and sunny, makes it hard to travel this land.

What makes this place perfect for kitesurfing practice is its strong winds all year round and flat waters without waves. At this place the Andes Mountains meet the sea and the wind is therefore compressed by the mountains and therefore it accelerates significantly.

I recommend to take at least two weeks to visit this area. People normally take “kite trips” to profit from its environment and get around the different kite spots and school in the zone. The best season to enjoy kite is from December to June. Though it is enjoyable all year long.

2. Cartagena de Indias, Bolivar

Cartagena, is a well-known city by its historic, romantic, beautiful narrow streets, Pastel-Colored houses and many other things, but it is also a place for water sports, it is located in the northern Colombia, down to the south of Colombia’s coast.

Here the kite spot is at la Boquilla, a small fishing town in the north of the city, here you will find different kite schools opened all year round, there is wind from about 11a.m. to 7p.m. most days in high season. The spot can be choppy depending on conditions, good for those who are experienced or wish to learn and improve. The best season is from December to April (best months: January, February, and March.

3. Santa Veronica, Atlántico

Located between Cartagena (80km) and Barranquilla (50km) on the Caribbean coast. It is a perfect, natural, out of the beaten track place which offers optimal conditions for kitesurfing, from weather conditions with nice temperature around 30º in both, water and air, to perfect steady winds all year round, this an untouched place, perfectly conserved, off from the crowded tourism.

The place offers different wave zones (one facing the Casa Agua de Vela, the other on the Olas Inn spot), freeriding zones and some flat zones, ideal for learning. The best kite season is from December to May (although it is possible all year round).

4. Lake Calima, Valle del Cauca

Is the largest artificial lake of Colombia with an area of 70 km2. It is located in the municipality of Darién in the valle del Cauca department. he lake is part of a hydroelectric project for generating power for the department. Year after it has become a place for water sports such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, and others. Winds are steady all year round.
